Gel is used in wheelchair seating and mattresses to redistribute pressure and improve comfort for the prevention of pressure ulcers and the treatment of Stage I and Stage II pressure ulcers. Gel is a static (non-powered) material which requires that the user is able to reposition themselves or be regularly repositioned by a care-giver. Gel is an excellent material for the prevention of pressure ulcers for those or are at moderate risk of developing pressure ulcers.

When to Consider alternative materials / therapies to gel

  • No ulcer and want maximum skin protection: Self adjusting air, Alternating Pressure Pads or cushions, Alternating Pressure with Low Air Loss
